Introduction, Biographies, Track details, Registrations, Audio files, Reviews The organ of Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh. Peter Collins 1990
Harpsichord after Pascal Taskin, 1769, made in 1988 by Douglas Hollick. The original is in the Russell Collection in Edinburgh, and has two manuals, lower 8' and 4', upper 8'. There is a buff stop to the upper 8' and shove coupler. It was tuned to an unequal temperament at A415 for this recording. Square piano by Muzio Clementi c.1811: a fine example of this type of instrument in mahogany with boxwood stringing and ring-turned legs with decorative brass rings at the top. The pedal leg is turned in the same style, but with no brass ring. The 'Irish' dampers and damper lift are mostly entirely original, as is the majority of the piano. It was bought by Douglas Hollick in 1996 from John Barnes in Edinburgh in a partly restored state, the restoration being completed by Douglas Hollick. This included re-stringing with iron and brass of the same type as the original wire, and with spiral wound bass strings. It is tuned at A415. |
